I love make up. We already know this.
However, I have a nightmare, my skin is just not sticky.
Yes, I KNOW “sticky skin” isn’t the professional term, but I have no other way to describe it. No matter what I do, my make up just doesn’t stay on my face for more then an hour. This is a NIGHTMARE, it’s just not fair on the world for me to leave the house make up free, therefore I am constantly topping up. I know day to day it’s not such a big deal but what really annoys me is whether I’m out and about in the day or for an evening, I end up having to carry a handbag sized bag of make up about with me.
So what to do? I’ve tried Primer (clarins, benefit (x2), shiesedo), I’ve tried sprays (hard candy), I’ve tried various foundations, light ones, tinted mouisturizers, sticks, powders, liquids, compacts, a mashup, different brands cheap, middle of the range, making you want to cry expensive, yet here I am, with the same predicament.
I used to put it down to the fact that I sat under the air-con units in the office, then put it down to being pregnant. But here I am, with a nearly two year old, and it’s still happening. Every morning I put it on, and by the time I’m back home I look up in my review mirror and already my nose is red, and my chin is shiny.
Yes, you could blame the weather (too hot, too cold, to windy, to wet), but then, even if I touch up, I sit at my computer for the rest of the day AND IT’S GONE AGAIN!
It’s not just foundation either, my mascara seems to disintegrate, my eyeliner vanishes (except for little unflattering smudges under my eyes), my lipstick doesn’t even make it out of the front door.
WHY?! Is it something I’m doing? (what could I be doing?), or is it just that I haven’t found the right brand?
I guess this isn’t really a blog post – it’s a plea – what make up do you use? What primer? What tips can you give me?

I’m going to give you my closely guarded tip. You are not going to like it and I urge the faint of heart to stop reading now.
Stop caring. Honestly. You are a lovely, fun person and no-one (worth it anyway) gives a goddamn shit if you have a shiny nose or chin. I know, I know, YOU care. I am not saying stop putting on make up, I am not saying embrace your hairy legs. Just that all that money you are spending on potions ( that don’t work) could be put to better use. Such as wine. Or (and I know your weak spot) holidays. So still put your makeup on, just carry ONE compact to take the shine down during the day. Embrace what you actually look like because it’s quite nice really.
If you want my other guess (seeing as you are going to ignore the paragraph above), I would say something is wrong with your application?

Holidays. Oh holidays. Although, nobody buys me holidays for Christmas (would love it if they did though – HINT HINT), but they do buy me make up.
Love that you know I’ll ignore it on the *I* care front, I feel more upbeat if I like what I see in the mirror. Far more productive.
Well stop looking in the mirror then.

Then how would I detect the child snot on my cheek?
when it dries it becomes hard and you can feel it.
I agree with Helen. I know how frustrating it is as I have the same issue. If I look in the mirror at lunch, my make up is usually gone – and I have acne so pretty noticeable. But you know what – I can only do so much. I can reapply my make up and get on with my day. I can’t change my skin type and nor can you – so stop worrying about it 🙂 There’s so many things you can influence to make yourself happy (such as M re: holidays) so you may as well try not to stress about the stuff you can’t 🙂
Also agree with Helen about you generally being bloody lovely. And the fact this isn’t probably the help you were looking for 😉

You’re right, I was hoping for brand recommendations to go on my Christmas list 😉
This wasn’t really a blog about how make up impacts happiness or causes stress (to me or other individuals who spend money on beauty products out of enjoyment or need), it was actually a light hearted post on make-up recommendations.
Let’s face it, a £30 foundation every 6 months doesn’t really impact my holiday plans, the price of flights during the school holidays do that all on their own. 🙂
You could get a nice gin for £30!
Anyway, not big brands but what I use is Barbara Daly primer and Avon mineral powder foundation which seems to work for me. Have you tried the new 5-in-1 miracle creams?
Author
Is the 5-in-1 miracle creams Avon too? I’ll def’ look at that as mum has just recommended bareMinerals which I bet is very similar.
The 5-in-1 I have is Garnier I think (I can’t be bothered to walk upstairs). I have to say it makes me break out so I rarely use it but I do like the effect when I do.
Well, I agree with you.. If I spend 20 mins (or whatever) putting my make up on in the morning, I’d expect it to be there at lunchtime still! If you’ve tried primer, different foundations, different consistencies of foundation, i.e. cream, liquid, powder, then maybe you need to go and sit your bottom down at a make up counter and ask them to suggest something. Are you applying moisturiser before you put make up on? If you’ve got oily skin it won’t sink in, it’ll just sit on the moisturiser.
It’s bloody annoying when it happens, regardless of how fabulous you know you are, make up should stay where it’s put.

You’re right – after all, it stays put on my collar!
I’d agree with others but my skin isn’t sticky skin either so I feel your pain. I’m currently using tinted moisturiser which will do for days when I don’t leave the house and bare skin just isn’t an option. I use MAC for days when I do leave the house – Studio Fix. That stuff sticks for sure (well maybe not every time). I also use powder to try and seal it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I recommend you speak to my beauty guru on Twitter (@heybpresto) – she knows everything. EVERYTHING. She works in beauty and is the dogs bollocks. Also, read the Beauty Mouth blog by Caroline Hirons – she helped me out a lot with skincare. Thanks to her my skin no longer resembles that of a teen. Good luck. You are beautiful though and you really shouldn’t care but I know it doesn’t work like that. I look dead with no make up on. AND DO NOT SAY I DON’T.

Studio Fix becoming a common recommendation (on twitter and facebook threads too!) Thank you x
The only combination that works for me Is No7 foundation/ powder, No7 bronzing pearls, Estee lauder blusher, Bad gal by Benefit mascara (I bloody love that stuff) although i do find i have a shiny nose sometimes by the end of the day! 🙁
